Water is disappearing − let’s go to work

Fishing boy on boat in Mozambique

On this day the sign to work came at 1pm. Not only the two brothers, their father and mother, but also their neighbors and friends grabbed their spears & dip nets and went fishing. Some pulled their boats out, others waded several kilometers through the knee-deep sea.

Every day, the majority of places on the ocean experience two high tides and two low tides. Sea levels constantly rise and fall caused by the combined effects of gravity, exerted by the Moon and the Sun and the rotation of the Earth. Not sure if the boys in Mozambique are fully aware of the tidal background. However, they know the definitely know the best spots to look for fish. Having spent hours with the boys, I understood the pride felt when the first fish was finally caught. Although it was such a beautiful one…

Marine products, particularly prawns, are Mozambique’s largest single export. But the country, which is still one of the poorest in the world and is visibly trying to recover from civil wars, more and more realizes the uniqueness of its marine life. http://marinemegafauna.org/
